Chimney Birds

OK, so our chimney is in bad shape. The mortar needs replacing inside and out, and the top 7 or so layers needs to be rebuilt, and cap needs to be put on it. Not to mention it is filthy and needs a good cleaning. Well, that is where out little story begins.
We received a coupon in the mail from a chimney repair/sweep company that said that they would clean the chimney for $95.99 and provide a free inspection. So, we called them up and they came out. He opened the flu and said, “There are birds in your chimney. They should be gone in 3-4 weeks, call me when they leave and I will come back”.
So, now we have to wait till the birds are full grown and leave the nest before we can get the chimney cleaned. Well, on Friday I heard a little flutter and a lot of bird chirping. Loud chirping. I thought it was a bird outside the window at first and ignored it. As the day went on (I had the day off), the chirping didn’t stop. After Mary-Frances got home, and I was finished cooking dinner, that the chirping was so annoying that I went to investigate. I realized that the chirping was coming from the chimney, and not outside. I then deduced that the chirping was really close.
I opened the flu, and the littlest bird fell out onto the floor. It was hardly moving, and covered in soot. I got a paper towel and picked it up and put it in a Mary-Kay packing box.
I then noticed that a second, older bird was still in the chimney, and he was the one making all the noise. He wasn’t in a spot where I could reach my hand up and grab, nor was he in a spot where I could see him. I put on some latex gloves and got a wire hanger from our neighbor and proceeded to poke around for the bird. Eventually, I found it and was lucky enough for the bird to grab the hanger with his feet that I was able to pull him out of the chimney. I put him in the box with his sibling. We drove the birds to the wildlife center where they told us they were baby Swifts and that would care for the animals until they were big/old enough to be either released back into the wild or to be put back into their nest. How they plan to do that, I have no idea.

That's pretty hilarious about the gloves. When we were staying at a friend's house a bird came out of her chimney and nate put on a hat, gloves, puffy jacket and sunglasses to get it. He screamed like a little girl too.
